Trees, Shrubs, and Groundcovers

They make our lives a little closer to heaven.

When I was only ten, in Oklahoma City, my mother had a beautiful backyard. I used to watch her tend it. I also had a hideout behind the crape myrtle and the Rose of Sharon. One May, I watched in fascination while a pair hummingbirds built their tiny nest in a "bush" beside my hideout.

That was a long time ago, but I treasure the memory because that "bush" sums up so many of the virtues of flowering shrubs. Even if you are not especially fond of birds, there are compelling reasons for incorporating flowering trees and shrubs into your sustainable organic garden.
