5 Minute Technical Tips to Get the Most out of Your Computer

How to ensure that you get the latest Garden Notes issue
(or any other pages on the net for that matter)

by John Gee

This is something which tricks many (even experienced) web surfers.

The software on your home computer stores copies of web pages in its memory to enable you to surf faster.

It will call that stored page up under many circumstances rather than check to see if the page has been updated. If the page has changed ( eg Sept edition replaced with Oct. edition ) then the user may be unaware and will read the outdated page supplied by their browser software.

Often internet service providers also store web pages on what is called a proxy server. Pages on the proxy server can be "served" up even though they are out of date.

The solution is that when you feel that this is occurring, bring up the relevant page

(eg http://www.gardensimply.com )

press the "refresh" button on your browser software ( "reload" button if you are using Netscape ) while holding down the shift key. This forces the software to go back to the original source of supply for the page

( ie http://www.gardensimply.com )

and you should be presented with the latest version.

It is also a good idea to occasionally clear your home computer's memory of these pages.

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer you go to Tools / InternetOptions / General. Press the "delete files" and "clear history" buttons. If you are using Netscape you go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Cache . Press the "clear memory cache" and "clear disk cache" buttons.

Hope this helps and that it enables you to enjoy the latest edition of Garden Notes!
