Imagine having this beautiful flower blooming in your garden from late July through September.
Hibiscus moscheutos, commonly called hardy hibiscus, is perennial in zones 5
through 9. This tall hibiscus (to 4 feet) makes a wonderful addition to the
background of the herbaceous border; just be sure to give it some elbow room.
To keep hardy hibiscus happy, provide ample sunlight (6 plus hours a day is
preferred) and adequate, consistent soil moisture. Soil that drains too readily
can be amended with compost or leaf mold to increase its water holding capacity.
The large flowers (to 5 inches in diameter) are showstoppers; be sure to locate
this plant where it can be seen and enjoyed.
A number of different cultivars should be available at your local garden center.
Colors include maroon, white, pink, and some with 'colorful eyes'. Buy when
they are in bloom if you have a color scheme to maintain in the garden.
