Is homecanning a dying art or is it still one of America's favorite pastimes? Below are the results of the last national homecanning survey taken by 250,000 random households across the United States for the Alltrista Consumer Products Company.

Who Is Homecanning?

56% of those surveyed have homecanned. That's over half of all Americans.

What Are They Canning?

  • 62% Jams & Jellies
  • 57.9% Vegetables
  • 38.5% Pickles
  • 38.0% Fruits
  • 33.9% Tomato sauces
  • 16.9% Salsas
  • 15.4% Relishes
  • 6.3% Meat
  • 11.9% Other


Where Do They Get the Produce That They Can?

  • 58% Their own garden
  • 13% Someone else's garden
  • 10% Farmer's Market or Roadside Stand


Why Do They Can?

  1. They didn't want to waste what they had grown.
  2. They liked the way their home-grown food tasted.
  3. Other reasons in no particular order - To have control over what they ate - avoid pesticides, preservatives. To be able to make dietary changes to meet their needs. To preserve desired combinations of foods. To can as a tradition. Because it's healthy. To give as gifts - in fact, 20% of all jars canned are given away!

  • 60% From their mothers
